Why it is so important to define mission, vision and values of a company?

In this post we are going to explain what is the mission, the vision and the values and why it is so important for a company or startup to have it defined.

It should be noted that these concepts can be applied to companies, startups, business areas, governments, among many other sectors because they trace the origin and destination of their existence. In fact, in Keetup we have established a mission, vision and values for the IT Department and Administration Department.

First of all, we must start by defining the Mission. This is the motive, purpose, reason of existence of a company or organization. It allows large groups of people to work in a unified direction towards a common cause.

It is the way to indicate to the exterior and the interior what the company do, it is mainly useful for new employees or to quickly describe the company in a presentation.

For example, MacDonalds.

“Our mission is to be our customers’ favorite place and way to eat & drink. We’re dedicated to being a great place for our people to work; to being a strong, positive presence in your community; and to delivering the quality, service, cleanliness and value our customers have come to expect from the Golden Arches – a symbol that’s trusted around the world.”

As a second step it is necessary to define the Vision. This is a clear statement that indicates where the company is heading for the long term and what it will become. It is a high target, high enough to never stop trying to reach it.

The vision is a demonstration of the ambition of the company and obviously it is useful for the clients and the rest of the environment.

For example, Microsoft.

“Our vision is to have a workstation that works with our software on every desktop and in every home.”

And finally we define the values. These are ethical principles on which the culture of the company is based, and allow us to create our patterns of behavior. It allows defining how we are and what we believe, in order to establish a framework that identifies us as individuals and as a company.

For example the values of Keetup are:

- We love what we doWe solve the problems in a simple way (KISS)

- We work as a team

- Challenges thrill us

- We always try to get in the customer’s shoes.

- We’re agile

- We are healthy people.
